The benefits of waterside living in Leith

Scotland’s capital, Edinburgh was recently named one of Time Out’s 48 best cities in the world in 2019 and the vibrancy of Leith is a big part of that. Leith is synonymous with culture and historic ships, but the water that gives the area its name could be one of the biggest advantages of living there.

The river Leith is of Celtic origin, meaning ‘flowing water’. Like many cities by the water, the Shore at Leith provides a great meeting point and is home to many of the area’s popular bars and restaurants, such as The Ship on the Shore.

But it’s not just the social scene that makes this a great place to live; the proximity to water is also a major positive for the area and those who choose to live there.

The benefits of water on people’s wellbeing is not as well publicised as the benefits of green space but the science does show that being by “blue space” benefits body and mind.

This could be because these areas are typically less polluted and benefit from more sunlight, but research also shows that people who live by water tend to be more physically active – and not just with water sports, but also walking and cycling.

Water is even recognised as having a psychologically restorative effect. Spending time in and around water can help with a positive mood and reducing a negative mood or stress. Proximity to water is also associated with positive aspects of physical and mental wellbeing, even including better social relations.

This goes some way to explain why Leith is an extremely welcoming and sociable area. So much so that the area even boasts its own festival; the Leith Festival takes place in June and celebrates theatre, music and arts.

If the benefits of living by water, plus all the cool aspects of Leith, are not enough for you, the area is also just a short walk or bike ride from the centre of Edinburgh. And, of course, because you live by the water, you’ll be more physically active.

We’re building a range of new one, two and three bedroom apartments in Leith with the nautical theme extending to the names of our apartment designs; including The Osborne, Regent and Alberta – all names of previous Royal Yachts.
